Workshop :: Butter Sculpture
(workshop for kids, but all ages are welcome)

*Please make reservations beforehand as spots are limited.

Traditionally, Tibetan monks created elaborate sculptures of plants
and animals inspired by stories of Buddha using butter from yak milk.
Due to both its plentitude and highly elastic qualities, Tibetans have found butter to be very conducive to sculpture. In Tibet, especially during Monlam (the Great Prayer Festival), butter sculpture contests were held among the major monasteries, and were often over 12 feet high!

The monks will work with children and adults to create traditional sculptures made from butter, as has been done in Tibet for over 800 years. Under the instruction of the monks, you will learn how to create beautiful, colorful flowers using non-toxic Play-Doh - a much cleaner and easier to work with than yak butter.

This workshop will begin with a demonstration by the monks and will be followed by the opportunity for each participant to make his/her/their own butter sculpture.

When : Sunday, March 10th
